If you've been waiting for the right moment to buy your flight to Costa Rica for the Honkytonk Homeslice Hoedown (3 nights with Bill Nershi's Honkytonk Homeslice + members of The String Cheese Incident, Railroad Earth, Hot Buttered Rum, Rowan/Rice Quartet, Leftover Salmon & The Drew Emmitt Band, see below for details)...THIS IS IT!!!

The Plan

We're building a network of artists spanning from New York to California. Our initial goal is to find and work with artists who are able to host mid-size shows (100-500 person draw) in their home cities.

The benefit for all artists is a built-in audience in each city where we can promote each others music for a reasonable cost. It also helps to know a friendly group of folks in each city who can help with issues that tend to come up during a tour.

The key issues for teaming up with other artists are:
1) Finding high quality, reliable artists
2) Reasonably compatible music between the artists
3) Determining if the artist is able to regularly draw 100-500 people per show.
4) Are they able to provide a PA and backline (drums, amps, mics, monitors, etc.) so that a minimum amount of equipment needs to be transported by the traveling artist.
5) Does the total financial picture for the show make sense for both the home and traveling artist
6) Most importantly: Determining if we want to work together from a personality perspective.

Based on population and location, the initial cities that we've targeted are:
1) New York
2) Chicago
3) Philadelphia
4) Detroit
5) Indianapolis
6) Baltimore
7) Columbus (Ohio)
8) Boston
9) Washington D.C.
10) Cleveland

Why the Music Tour Network exists

After each tour, we'll refine and update our goals:

1) Create a logical tour route with host bands in each city and at least one tag band.
2) Each city host can do whatever they want to arrange and promote their show since they know their market best.
3) We act as a central coordinator for the tour routing, getting out national promotions to the media, and making available national promotion material to each of the host bands so that they can customize the information for their show.
4) We communicate "best practices" through www.MusicTourNetwork.com and here on tribe so that everyone can learn from each other.
5) We make sure that financial compensation issues, venue information, backline issues, and show times (load in, set start times, set length) are all communicated well in advance via the www.MusicTourNetwork.com website. This allows us to help people who are having trouble organizing a show to succeed, makes sure that everyone knows what the details are in advance of each show, and allows us to drop shows that are clearly not going to succeed.

Hurricane Katrina relief tour

We've just been contacted by NBC news and their local affiliate here in Detroit to organize and fund raising concert for the victims of Huricane Katrina. Taking this to the next logical step with all of us here on Tribe. Why not expand this to a fund raising tour of independent musicians who are part of Tribe?

We understand that not everyone can travel, so we suggest using the CDBaby "TourBaby" model that we were a part of several years ago:
1) A band or artist in each host city would be in charge of obtaining a date, venue, local lineup, PA (if the venue doesn't have one)
2) Ideally, artists would share a backline show the changeover times are short between sets
3) We'd set up a route for the show (no overlapping dates) and help coordinate information (customizable posters, media contacts, etc)
4) One artists would be the "Tag" from the previous show to the next so that there's continuity from one show to the next.
5) Ideally, the shows would be scheduled on a Friday or Saturday to facilitate travel for the traveling "Tag" artist

We've found that 4 artists is an a good number of acts. Sample event schedule:
8:00pm-8:45pm: Local opening act
9:00pm-9:45pm: Tag artist
10:00pm-10:45pm: Local act
11:00pm-to close: Local headlining act

The show can be at any size venue. The key thing is:
1) We need to start this now
2) This tour needs to last a while because the people in the south are going to need our help for some time.

Hi there, folks !

I am working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands in India - through various channels like direct marketing & club representation, etc. I am mostly looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a well-knit network of music lovers, which I am in the process of developing. Basically I am open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds. We'll rest market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. Anybody who has or knows someone with great music to share - and who wants to capture the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details. U can send me ur website, clips, bios etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in

P.S: There are also offers for a few live gigs at select 5star hotels in the holiday (if u happen to be visiting India) season.

Looking to make a big musical bang with all u mates at Tribe !

Cheers

I'm a regular reader of web based networks ranging from Dave here on Great Lakes/BlackStain to Jenn at MidwestMusic.com to Mitch & Rick at MichiganBands.com, Mary at MichiganArtists.com, Derek at CDBaby and a bunch of others. The common thread that all of us who either play, promote, manage, or own a venue is networking. Many people don’t see the value in this and instead they prefer to not work together--to each their own. We support the above people and communities commitment to helping each other by trading shows, letting other artists know about shows available to them, and helping to get artists paid for their hard work while making money for the venues that support live music. As we all know, this is not an easy thing to do in this industry.

I'd say booking is that hardest thing to do in this industry. Coordination between the agents, artists, and venue can be a real challenge. And by booking, I mean in major and smaller markets throughout the Midwest. To help move this along, we moved what was originally a discussion topic on Tribe.net to form the Music Tour Network www.MusicTourNetwork.com

This growing team of people, which includes folks from the above named websites, is focused on bringing together artists, venues and promotion people who strongly believe in two ideals:
1) The unshakeable belief that music is the world's language.
2) Trust

For now, the Music Tour Network is building a tour route that spans from New York City, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago and smaller cities between. To make this work for everyone who wants to tour and make money we need three things:
1) Local Host artists in each city that we can count on to do what they say they’re going to do: Organize a great show, perform a great show, draw enough people to sell the venue out, show up on time, no bad attitudes
2) Traveling artists who: Perform a great show, show up on time, no bad attitudes, and agree to organize a show on their home turf and invite the Local Host artist from another area to perform
3) Venues: Who are interested in working with us and gaining confidence that the right mix of local and out-of-state artists will make them money.

And there's the key issue for venues: Making money. I've done a lot of financial consulting for music and entertainment venues and they are in a difficult financial situation as well. From their perspective, it's less expensive to pay one DJ to spin a record or do karaoke, then it is to hire a band, rap group, or even duet to perform live--Less equipment, lass hassle, and more money for everyone.

So how can bands and venues be successful? Hardcore advertising and getting the word out: Using Myspace and all of the other websites plus E-mail is step one. But the real work comes by following up with phone calls and arranging to sell tickets in advance. (Note: This is not the same a "pay-to-play" since you’re not going to get “fined” for not selling tickets). If you’re the Local Host artist or from the area where the venue is located, it’s your job as part of the network to fill the venue up with people until it's bursting at the seams. The traveling artists will have little draw at your venue, but when it's their turn to host a show, then the burden is on them to draw like crazy. Note: Please be conservative with your estimates on draw--it's much better to promise 100 and bring in 200 than the other way around.

As an example: With effort, Jackie Blue will draw 150-200 people for a local show. So we assume for planning purposes that our draw will be 100. If a show at a venue will be sold out at 300 people, we need to team up with 2 other local bands that will very conservatively draw 100 people each—as proven by selling 100 tickets in advance of the show. Then the fourth, opening band (Traveling artist) can be brought in without the concern of having to draw.

In this way the artists play to a packed house, make money, and the venue makes money and sees our collective commitment to help the venue prosper. It all requires cooperation and planning between the show organizers, artists and venue (lots of phone calls and E-mail).

As positive examples on how to get people to shows, I know of at least three people who do this very well: Shannon and Greg from Zuby's band and Carrie from Jackie Blue.

If you have your own ideas, suggestions, or positive examples on how to expand our combined artist's network, I welcome them.
